Products must meet all of the FDA's health claim criteria, which are based on the Reference Amount Customarily Consumed (RACC) as specified by the FDA, for a specific product category:

  • 6.25 grams soy protein or more
  • Low fat (<=3 grams)
  • Low saturated fat (<1 gram)
  • Low cholesterol (<=20 mg)
  • Sodium value of <=480 mg for individual foods, <=720 mg if the product is classified as a main dish product, and <=960 mg if the product is classified as a meal product
  • Foods made with the whole soybean may also qualify for the health claim if they contain no fat in addition to that present in the whole soybean . These would include soy foods such as: tofu, soymilk, soy-based burgers, tempeh, and soy nuts.
